Art Workshops

Harmony Musik and Art Youth Outreach Project

In July 2011, World Vision in Madang Province  invited me and my colleagues within Music, Theater and Arts & Design fields to assist in a two weeks workshop from the 2nd to the 17th of that Month.  We went to train some of the youths in two remote areas of Madang (Usino-Bundi and Bogia).  The training was part of the HMAYOP program (Harmony Musik and Art Youth Outreach Project), which is a youth focused project that utilizes creative arts to advocate and create awareness on health, social, environmental and cultural issues affecting the lives of young men and women in rural Papua New Guinea.

The workshop was intended to develop skills for youths in those areas so they can use these skills to contribute in the development process and create a better society for them to live in.  Following those trainings, the participating youths then transferred the acquired skills down to their peers, communities and even in one way or the other their districts as a whole.
Some of the Participants at Walium in Usino-Bundi

We had a week-long training at Walium, in the Usino-Bundi area then went on to Aidibal at the end of the first week where we trained the villagers at the area until the 16th of July.
The Visual Arts training which I conducted attracted a lot of men than women.  The youngest of the participants was 11 years whilst the oldest was 53 years old.  A lot of the participants who attended the training from both areas were between the ages of 15 and 25 years old.  About 15% of the participants were students, mostly from primary school levels.

In the first week's training at Walium, couple of persons living with disability attended the trainings.  It was really fun and I enjoyed the training the whole week with the company of those persons living with disability.  I did learned a lot of things from my interaction with these people though it was really though at first.  There was one who couldn't speak or hear and he was my greatest challenge, especially my level of communication wasn't good enough understanding sign languages.  Despite his state, he was the dominant character in the group and I've learnt a lot of things from him.
Participants at Aidibal in Bogia

I had the access to my USB Modem so during the last day of our training in both areas, I showed them some internet stuff, visited my website, then went to flash-earth (virtual earth online) and showed them my house in the Capital.  For most of them, it was their first time to see and feel the internet presence at their village.  The amazing thing was we sat in the bushes, under the bamboo three and on the sand then I uploaded few of their photos onto a page on my website where I created for them.  It was a different feeling altogether compared to having internet access in the city.  The participants were very happy and told me they'd be in touch.

This project was a community project funded by World Vision in Madang and I was one of the Volunteers assisting to deliver the Visual Arts training.
